International travel is on hold. Competitions are cancelled. Expeditions will have to wait for months.
For now, we have to settle for looking at our bucket lists and world maps, maybe even lay out all of our gear to bring back memories of the last time we were out in the trails.
The need for adventure is greater than ever.
But in these last few weeks, as we see signs of hope in the world returning back to normal, we have also witnessed outdoor adventure companies get creative for their communities.
I’ve put together a list of some of the best ways they are inspiring adventurers hanging out at home.
Camping is an iconic getaway in the summer, but with limited access to parks and backcountry, places for setting up the tent and sleeping under the stars are limited supply. But REI is making us remember that it doesn’t matter. You can create the camping experience anywhere and what better way to do it now than right at home.
“Staying close to home doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your favorite sleeping bag. Experience the joys of camping close to home in backyard wonderlands or living room campouts. Shop for the perfect tent at the link in our bio.” - REI
As national parks and recreation areas have opened, there are new guidelines to be aware of and KEEN wants to make sure you can get back out there quickly and safely.
Check out their special KEENstream interview series with experts from various conservation organizations showing you how to do just that. Watch here.
Another company stepping in to help eager adventurers is Salomon, who’s motto is “Time to Play.” Recognizing that quarantine has taken a lot of us out of peak outdoor shape, they want to help you get that runner’s high again while knowing how to ease your body back on the trails. Check out their latest blog “5 Tips for Returning to Training."
Protecting our preserved lands is more important than ever. The past few months have helped us all remember how much we need adventure in our lives and that we all have to do our part to protect our planet so we can keep exploring it. Check out what SmartWool among countless outdoor adventure companies are doing as part of the Recreate Responsibly coalition “to protect the people and places you love while you get outside.”

As an aspiring mountaineer, I fully embrace the "Leave No Trace" way of life in the outdoors. We need to respect this planet and its resources, so future generations can enjoy it. That's why I'm such a huge fan of Cotopaxi's Del Dia collection, where each pack is made unique because they're made of 100% recycled fabric. Here's mine...
You can shop the collection here.
Now that the world is opening up for adventure-seekers to explore, my hope is that the initiatives these outdoor adventure companies are taking will give you the knowledge and know-how to get back out there.
There will likely never be another time in our lifetimes where we had to hold ourselves back from adventure.
Remember this feeling and how much you love the outdoors.
